Thanks to the Whitby Gazette for giving Walk Through Bethlehem some great coverage after the 2011 event. If you'd like to see the full sized version of this image (and read the write-up) visit the Press page by Clicking Here.
With only a couple of days now before our 2011 Walk Through Bethlehem, we're busy with final preparations. Today we've been making the Census for this year's event (a quiz which will take people around the event, enabling them to find out interesting information about the time of the first Christmas).
We're going to start putting information up on this site under 'Resources' and in blog posts to enable others to run their own Walk Through Bethlehem style events. This post takes you through how to create an old-looking Census quiz.
1. Write your census and print it off on A5 or A4 thick paper or card. We used A5, 160gsm thin card. Try a mixture of questions about the stalls you have at your Walk Through Bethlehem and Biblical questions and use interesting fonts or images to make it appealing.
2. Scrunch up all your census'. This will enable the tea to stain the paper better.
3. Make a really strong pot of tea. We used a baking tray and about 8 tea bags with a couple of litres of water. Dip each (flattened) census in the tea and briefly drip dry.
4. Do a few census' at a time. The number should be the same number as you can fit in your oven (see below) - we did 12 at a time.
5. Scrumble each census again briefly, then flatten as you place them onto the racks in your oven, which needs to be set at around 200'C.
6. Put the census' on each rack, do not put them on top of each other as they may stick together, however a little overlap is fine. We got 4 census' on each shelf.
7. After a couple of minutes remove them from the oven. They should be dry before you remove them.
8. Repeat the process until you've stained, scrunched and dried all your census'.
Easy!
Our Nativity Scene is available to download from the Resources page. We've packaged them up to give away on Saturday, but you can print your own out any time and follow the instructions included to make your own Walk Through Bethlehem Nativity Scene.
Note: we've included a piece of thin wire in our kits so that the star can be positioned above the town - if you print off your own copy you'll need to get some wire from somewhere if you want to do the same!
As last year's event was the first Walk Through Bethlehem we've organised, we used local press advertising to get the word around, as well as personal invitations and our vinyl banners. This year, although we know word of mouth will help a lot, we've made use of both the Whitby Gazette and the Whitby Advertiser, placing adverts in both.
This post is just a historical record really, so that in future years we can see what advertising had greatest impact and adjust our plans accordingly. Here's the artwork for our 2011 advertising campaign:

We got our invitations printed by SoloPress who were very reasonably priced and offer a very quick turnaround.
